Inkscape is an excellent open source vector graphics editor, which was primarily developed for UNIX-like operating system, originally developed for Linux. As it is very popular and it has a lot of contributing developers, it is quickly spreading and it is being ported to many other platforms, including Mac OS X and Microsoft Vista.
Inkscape is not a program like Adobe’s products, but it is not a target group. Inkscape is not definitely for the professional web graphics designer as it has no capabilities for the sophisticated filters or other experienced stuff.
But, in some discussion forum, there was a remark about the pen tablet and Inkscape. The writer was pointing of non-existence of the pen tablet support in Inkscape. Sorry, Inkscape supports pen tablets, at least those from Wacom, which are the most commonly used pen tablets under Mac OS X.
When you plan to use your graphics capabilities occasionally, I can make no other recommendation. You definitely have to download Inkscape (requires X11 under Mac OS X).
