It is my second favorite Apple Myth – the Apple’s hardware is not extendible in the future. It is a common argument from the PC-maniacs, who are willing to buy a new hard disc and graphics card every 6 – 8 months to have the best possible performance available.
Yes, it is pretty difficult to extend your iMac; you can extend better your Mac Pro, when you have it. But, there is a common misunderstanding of the user of the hardware. The iMac computer is not for the tech freak. It is the computer for the user, who wants to make his/her tasks, projects and other stuff just done.
I did not buy Apple to research Internet for the new graphics cards to exchange them. I did buy my iMac just to produce documents, presentations, browse my photos and other similar stuff. I do not care about the graphics card, which is inside my iMac and to be honest – I do not know, what kind of the card is inside. I just need to see all my open windows in Exposé, when I want to see them. And I need to see them pretty quickly, which is the card in the iMac pretty sufficient.
Also, I do not store gigabytes of movies inside my computer. I just have an external hard drive for back ups of the work, I have to do and I am really lucky, the hard drive is working for me and there is still a lot of empty space on it. I do not care about the hard drive, which is inside my iMac as I use it as a temporary space and there is a space just for important documents.
What I would really welcome is a bigger number of USB ports available to me as I usually have all of them occupied by different devices – these are keyboard, mouse, printer, pen tablet and external disk and I have a completely full house. It should not be that expensive for Apple to add some more USB ports to the computer.
There is also some very important moment for Apple users compared to the Windows based world. As Apple does not make so many updates in the hardware, the applications must be written without relying on the best resources available to the application. There is still a lot of users running their applications on an old PowerPC G3 and they are lucky to run the software on it. So, the application must be really careful about using system resources. It is very similar to my old Sinclair ZX Spectrum (probably no one can remember that excellent piece of hardware). The games, which were developed for such a slow and limited hardware, were just amazing and I still remember them, right after so many years. Nowadays, I do not remember the computer game, which could attract me for such a long time, like Jet Set Willy and many others. The reason is the using of available resources up to the maximum.
My own conclusion is simple – there is almost no need to extend Apple hardware. When I need to get the best possible performance, I have to go somewhere else. When I need to get my work done, Apple is the best choice for me.
