Windows Vista brought a concept of the widgets (ok, they call them gadgets) not in the Dashboard as you can know it from Mac OS X, but in the side bar on the main screen.
Thinking of those two concepts, I think, the Microsoft’s approach is more user friendly. I can understand, Mac OS X was the first one to implement /honestly, widgets on the desktop are pretty well known from Linux/ and they decided to make an extra screen for widgets, which was definitely a quicker solution to make and it saved a lot of space on the screen for other applications.
Me personally, I would love to have a side bar and to see the most important and tiny widgets all the time, just to be sure, not to miss a single appointment and to know, what is on TV, maybe. And the sort of quick launch for a calculator, which is my own favorite dashboard widget, I use most. I would like to have a calculator sitting there, waiting for the action and I would like to make it bigger, when I need to make a calculation and I would be more than happy, when the Mac OS X would be able to find a place on the screen, when the widget will not cover the document, which I am working on or a page. I am really upset, when I need to make a quick calculation, but the data are under the widget, when I press F12.
Maybe, Apple will make me happy, but I really believe, the Microsoft’s approach for the Dashboard is better and the users will find it more useful as Apple’s solution is hidden for many users.

Hey, get an application called onyx. In the dashboard settings, turn on the “developer widgets”, and then, go to dashboard, click and hold a widget, press F12, and let go of the widget, it will stay on the desktop without the need to use dashboard.
