Apple can stay calm for a short period of time - Microsoft Zune must be a big disappointment for Microsoft after several months. The device, which was introduced to the market with such a huge marketing budget, was expected to make a bigger hole to the market.
But, as Apple demonstrates every day, people do not want to buy things, which are full of technologies, but they want to buy devices, which are sufficient for their needs. No one wants to buy a dishwasher with 200 programs to wash dishes when you have no space inside to put your dishes.
Microsoft wanted to develop a device, which could beat the whole iPod family and was adding new features as people reported their wishes for extensions of iPod. But at the end, most of the features are hardly crippled to be compliant with the media business.
The most expected feature was a WI-FI connection implemented in Microsoft Zune. But, when the product was launched to the market, the WI-FI capabilities was so crippled, that the cable used by iPod is much more flexible solution at the moment. When Apple will add WI-FI to the iPod, it will have to be a completely different approach as I am really the user, who does not want to play the song 3 times or just for 3 days. I do not want such a solution.
Also, I hope, there will be an update of iPods pretty soon. The iPod family is almost the same for more than one year. I do not take a bigger hard disc as an update, it is very easy solution and the capacity is not the major issue at the moment.
I would like to see my iPod supporting more media formats, to get really working WI-FI solution. When Apple TV can be connected to the home network as its integral part, why my iPod cannot be a part of the network as well? It should not be a legal question as there can be one computer, which can be taken as the real “home†computer for iPod and others can use iPod as the external library. That would be really nice. I would like to play my music at friend directly from the iPod over the computer and leaving home – my music goes with me. Nothing is left at friends´ place. Is that idea really stupid?
Is that really a question of digital rights? With my mobile, I can really connect with anyone in the underground, pushing files there and back and Sony and Universal stay calm about it. I believe, Apple has such a power in negotiations, that it can negotiate conditions, which will allow the users to have their iPods as integral parts of home wireless networks.
