Cleaning my old iMac G5

04.08.07 | Comment?

I have the iMac G5 for about two years and I am a completely satisfied user. As I bought it with 512 MB RAM, which got later updated to 1,5 GB RAM, it is still very sufficient for my work I need to do. /BTW, adding the memory to the computer was a big fun as I did it with friends around me and we were not able to connect it there correctly and we used the second module as an example, which resulted in iMac without any memory for about 2 hours/.

As I was browsing the Internet, looking for recommended software, the computer was really full of unused stuff, I decided to make a complete face-lifting and to install it from the scratch.

First mistake was to use the DVDs delivered with MacBook Pro. The system on that discs does not support PowerPC G5 anymore. But it tells it in the moment of booting, not earlier.

So, I had to find the original ones – with Mac OS X 10.4.3 – the installation was really quick, but later, the computer downloaded about 1GB of patches and other improvements. It is a huge work from Apple.

But right now – iMac is quick and silent again. I think, Apple also needs cleaning sometimes. Right now, just NeoOffice and AdiumX are installed. But not for a long time – they will get some other friendly applications.
