Google released Google Desktop for Mac OS X several days ago. And to be honest – they released excellent piece of software again. I hope, Picasa for Mac OS X will follow quickly.

Google Desktop is very similar to standard Mac OS X Spotlight or to QuickSilver, but it also index not just the content of your hard drives, which you select to index, but it also includes your Gmail account and it also index your searching history on the Internet.

Google Desktop does not index just the names of the files, but it also index the content of your files (for specific file types, NeoOffice is not included). It does its job excellently. You can really recognize the core business of Google in the tool – indexing the web. With the same approach, they just index the content of your hard drives.

Before Google Desktop starts to produce the relevant results of its job, it needs to index the content of your hard drives, which is done fully in background, but it can take up to several hours, when your hard drive is full of files and information to be included.

I had difficulties to work with QuickSilver and honestly – Spotlight – I always forget, it is up there in the corner, but Google Desktop looks really great. I will try to use it for several days and maybe – I will be another satisfied user of Google applications.

Honestly – could you develop Picasa for Mac OS X? I miss it, a lot. iPhoto is great, but I like Picasa more.
