Installing PHP, mySQL and Apache on your Mac

04.23.07 | Comment?

Sorry guys at Apple, it can be a real nightmare to get this things correctly working on Apple. I had no issue with Apache and mySQL, but PHP – I was really not able to get things rolling. I was expecting something more “Aqua way”. I do not like to run Terminal application on my desktop as I have really bad memory and to remember all that difficult commands – it is not for me.

The best solution for me is MAMP. It is everything in one single package and the servers are running just in moments, when I want to run them. You have to start a simple application /with a click of the mouse/ and this application takes care of the whole package to work correctly for you.

The only thing, which you can be a bit sad about – the packages included in MAMP are not the latest releases. Honestly, do you need the latest releases? I do not need it and I believe you do not need that either. I just need stability and some reliable performance from the webserver, just to see, whether the things are working correctly.

MAMP is a real Mac OS X application. You only have to drag and drop the icon to the application folder and you are done. When you run the suite for the first time, you need to set the right path to your web folder or you can choose the one set by the application and for connecting to the webserver, you need to specify also the correct port number.

The advantage of the whole package is the inclusion of the phpMyAdmin, which is a good tool for setting and managing mySQL databases and for monitoring the real change of data in the database.

The MAMP is excellent tool, when you need to make a check, the website you are working on, will work correctly and without runtime errors.
