Mac OS X has a standard feature of the operating system – archives can be managed automatically by the system. Honestly, I am not a lucky user of the feature of Mac OS X. The system always decompress the file into the same folder as the file is and it makes a mess on my hard drive.
Also, the file formats handled by the internal application is very limited. But as usually. The open source world offers a cure for the issue. For me, my best recommendation is The Unarchiver. The application can be set to unarchive all the files to one folder, or the folder of the file to be decompressed or the application can ask for the destination folder.
The number of file formats is extremely huge. The application is able to decompress all the formats I personally know, including the SIT format. This is excellent for me as I do not like StuffIT.
When you want to have a replacement of the standard application, I can fully recommend The Unarchiver.
